dsDNA (Double Stranded DNA) • Code 86225

  • Test Type
  • Specimen Information
Test Description

dsDNA antibodies are IgG autoantibodies against the double stranded DNA present in serum, as an aid to the diagnosis of SLE, as these antibodies are very specific markers for SLE. They are also found in patients with autoimmune conditions such as mixed connective tissue disease, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and Sjögren’s syndrome.

When should this test be ordered?
This test is ordered for a variety of connective tissue disorders and in patients with a positive ANA result who are suspected to have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
High Risk · >= 76 (IU/mL)
dsDNA: Supports the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Treat based on symptoms. Consider anti-inflammatory medications for joint pain and stiffness; steroid creams for rashes; corticosteroids of varying doses to minimize the immune response; and antimalarial drugs for skin and joint problems.
Borderline Risk · 30-75 (IU/mL)
For values that fall within the weak positive range, it is recommended to repeat testing in one month to confirm the patient’s autoimmune status.
Low Risk · <= 29 (IU/mL)
Within Reference Range.
Testing Method Used
ELISA.

Please ship samples daily.
Improvements and Prevention
Physicians may select and prescribe medications specific to your diagnosis.
Symptoms can be alleviated by maintaining a healthy weight, physical therapy or strength enhancing exercises, reduce fatigue by getting adequate rest and sleep, and consuming an anti-inflammatory diet.
Specimen Type
Serum
Fasting Required
No, but may be done with other tests that requires fasting.
Drawing and Processing
  1. Draw from a vein into a SST tubetube1
  2. Invert tube (do not shake) 1-2 times to mix adequately
